Funding Local Ideas, Strengthening Our Community

Do you have a charitable idea or a community project that could use a funding boost? The Community Grants Program supports local nonprofits, community groups, and individuals working to improve Carbon County, Montana.

Applications for the 2025 grant cycle are anticipated to open in late March. If you would like to be on the email notification list for the application opening, contact Laura McHugh at laura@rlacf.org. Eligible applicants can request up to $2,000 in funding for projects that create a positive impact in our community.

Our Community Grants support two main types of projects:

1. Innovative Projects

For new ideas, start-up programs, and capacity-building efforts. These projects often involve collaboration with multiple organizations and/or funding partners.

Past Examples:

  • Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary’s Keeper Camps – Expanded summer camp offerings.
  • Tumblwheel Studios’ Belfry water tower mural – A public art project created through community collaboration.
  • Red Lodge Main Street Bench Restoration – A local citizen-led project to refurbish town benches.

2. Nonprofit Sustainability

For nonprofits seeking funding to strengthen their organization’s long-term sustainability and improve their ability to serve the community.

Past Examples:

  • Beartooth Trails – Purchased new trail maintenance tools and a tool sharpener.
  • MT Tour’s Community Bike Center – Acquired bike repair tools to expand community services.
  • River Arts and Books in Roscoe – Furnished an indoor gathering space for community engagement.

Before applying, please review our funding exclusions. We do not provide grants for:

  • Trips, parties, or celebrations
  • Projects or programs that have already happened
  • Religious or political activities
  • Projects outside Carbon County
  • Recurring programs
  • Organizations that have not yet submitted final reports
